Things I learned by Jessie

Things I learned.

By Jessie
7th grade HPSEL

Something I learned on the Uncle Bud's hut Trip was how to play many game.  The other kids who had been on the hut trip before taught people how to play Egyptian Rat Slap, 007, BS and spoons.

Another thing I learned on the hut trip was that even though the hiking and skinning up seems awful when you're doing it, its is one of the most rewarding feelings when the hut finally comes into view and you're one of the first people up there.
I learned that every moment on a hut trip like this sears itself in your mind. For many months to come, you keep re-living the moments and it brings a smile to your face.

I learned that there is almost no better feeling then when your head hits the pillow each night, and it seems you awake three minutes later, besides the feeling of being completely refreshed and the smell of firewood floating up the stair case.

I learned that I have something really great to look forward to next year.

Earning My Turns by Christian

Earning My Turns

I'll never forget the first full day at the hut.  We all got up and had and awesome breakfast.  We talked about our plan for the day, hike to the saddle behind the hut, then climb the ridge.  We got our stuff together for the hike.  Skins were securely attached to skis,  snowshoers strapped on their shoes and we were off on our adventure.

At first everything went well, the sun was shining, everyone was happy.  Then all the skiers in the front, especially the ones breaking trail, started to realize snow was sticking to their skins.  At one point Mrs. Bangtson had 8 or 9 inches of snow on the bottom of her skis.  Many of the skiers were banging their poles on the side of their skis in attempt to get the snow off.  Daniel ended up bending his pole so he gave it to Michael to bend back.  Michael hit it against a try, and broke the pole in half!  We tried to fix it with sticks and duct table, but nothing would work.  Daniel ended up hiking up the mountain with one pole.

Finally we got to a clearing near tree line.  It was a breathtaking view with huge peaks all over.  We
hiked up to the edge of the clearing and began to get lunch together.  We dug a trench and made benches out of skis.  For lunch we had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, along with Nutella and tortillas.  We shared a bag of wildberry skittles for dessert.  When everyone had their fill we packed up and got ready for the final push.

We hiked up to the closest peak.  Right as we left the cover of the trees the wind picked up and it got cold.  Once we got near the top everybody got ready for the decent.  Mrs. Bangtson dug an avalanche pit and we all took turns getting in it and looking for weak layers of snow.  After that we did an isolated column test and found out the snow was pretty safe, but still a little dangerous because of weak layer pretty far down.  We decided to take a line down that wasn't as steep and was closer to the trees.  Mrs. Bangtson went first and then a couple of other people.  Finally it was my turn to go.

As I dropped in, I experienced a feeling like no other.  I was free and in my own world.  I had earned my turns.  I was freeing my heal and freeing my soul.

After that we all regrouped and went into the trees.  We weaved in and out until we ended up on a lake that had been frozen over.  We put on our skins and hiked up through a beautiful glad back to the hut.  At the top a few of us decided we would take a run down through the glad.  The snow was awesome.  It was like a freshly groom run, only natural.

At the bottom we put our skins back on and hiked back to the hut.  When we finally got back we all took off our sweaty clothes ad chilled out around the hut.  Some people played card games, some people prepared dinners, and some people worked on the dog puzzle.

I'll never forget that day.  It was one of the biggest and most fun adventures I had ever been on.  I'm so happy I was able to be a part of it and it will be in my memories forever.

Hut Highlights by Daniel

Hut Highlights

Adventure is important to me because it lets me explore and be free.  Adventure changes every day depending on what I am faced with.

Something I learned about myself on the hut trip is the more I'm outdoors and on an adventure and just away from society the more I'm happy.  I also learned how to build a 750 dog puzzle and I learned I can climb up a mountain with blisters and skins that didn't stay on me skis.

The most challenging part of the trip for me was doing all the things with my narley blisters and only one pole (the other broke on the hike). The most rewarding part of the trip was getting some rad pow pow turns in and spending time at the hut.

Early Morning Turns

We woke up early sensing the powder and how we could slash it up. I got up before eating breakfast and my blisters were killing me. I got on all my gear and myself, Micheal, Christian, Mrs. Bangtson, Mrs. Mack, and Julia all went outside to hunt down the powder. We got geared up and set off an adventure.  We went down the hill making the best turns, on teles, I've had in awhile. It was all worth it even when my skins failed.  I will never forget that morning.

Adventure time.
The last piece of the dog puzzle!

On the trip we adventured and skied.

We also played card games and made a sweet dog puzzle.

I also won spoons, that's kind of a big deal at the hut.

We ate great food that we all contributed to.

Uncle bud's HPS trip of 2013 was full of adventure and fun.

ADVENTURE

Wildlife Encounter by Lydia

So I was down at the campfire, roasting some s'mores.  The smoke was hurting my eyes so I started heading back to the hut.  Right when i was about to get back in the hut something jumped out of nowhere and ran away.  I was like, 'Holy cow! A fox!' So I went back inside and after a while I needed some water,  I went outside to grab the pot of water that had been cooling in the snow and the same creature was trying to get in our water bucket!

After those experiences, well lets just say it was quite an ordeal going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.  I was a bit jumpy at every shadow I saw on the long walk to the outhouse.

Over the course of the hut trip there were many challenges. The one that stood out to me the most was on the hike up.

The hike on the road seemed to take forever, but the snow was packed down from snow mobiles. However, when we got to the trail, there was quite a bit of fresh snow on it.

After hiking on the trail for about twenty minutes, I started to notice my skis getting heavier. I looked at the bottom of them and there was about an inch of snow on my skins. I scraped it off and continued to hike. Later, when we were only about twenty minutes from the hut, snow started sticking to my skins again. I hiked for a little while until hiking with so much snow on my skins got too tiring. I took a long break to get all the snow off my skis. It took a while because this time the snow underneath my skis was more then two inches thick. When I was done scraping the snow from my skins I presses on  and finally saw the hut.

It was really rewarding to know that all of our hiking had paid off and we  finally made it to Uncle Bud's Hut.

Hut Trip Highlights - David

This adventure was important because I showed commitment to attending the Adventure Club.  I enjoyed making fires, sledding and meeting new friends.

The most challenging part of the trip was hiking up because it was all up hill for a long time!

The most rewarding part was getting to make and eat the ice cream!

David's home made snow skate was a hit - as well as a useful took for descending.
